first_imgNORWALK- A motorcyclist was killed Thursday morning when a driver lost control of her car and hit his motorcycle on the Artesia (91) Freeway in Norwalk, California Highway Patrol officials said. Authorities withheld the victim’s name but said he was a 53-year-old South Gate resident. The crash occurred at about 6:40 a.m. on the carpool lane of the eastbound 91, east of Norwalk Boulevard. CHP Officer Kevin O’Toole said the driver of a Honda Accord merging onto the freeway from Norwalk Boulevard at about 45 mph lost control, veered across the eastbound lanes and into the carpool lane, where her car hit the motorcycle. The impact ejected the motorcyclist over the center divider. He landed on the westbound carpool lane, said CHP Sgt. Charlie Sampson. Paramedics took the motorcyclist to La Palma Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Sampson said. Blood Center open despite strike WHITTIER – Although some nurses and technicians for the American Red Cross went on strike Monday, officials at the Blood Donor Center at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital want residents to know they remain open, hospital official Terri Starkman said. Blood collected at the hospital, 12401 Washington Blvd., remains at the hospital for use by its patients, she said. The hospital’s donor center is open from 8 a.m to 6:30p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday.
